Mr. Scott A. Bonney

Scott Bonney is a native of Utica, NY and resides there currently with his wife Shane, who also is his colleague at West Canada Valley CSD in Newport, NY (Herkimer County) where they share the duties of running the district's instrumental music program in 5th-12th grades.
Mr. Bonney is the district brass and percussion specialist instructing all instruments in those families to students in individual or small like-instrument groupings, once every six school days for 20-40 minutes. He directs the elementary band (5-6) one hour per cycle, the middle school concert band (7-8) daily for 25 minutes, and teaches middle school music to grades 7 & 8.
Extra curricular music instruction of the high school jazz ensemble including preparation for scholastic competition is a part of his duties year round. In the fall he performs in the pit orchestra for the school musical on trumpet or percussion. Mr. Bonney has assisted with the district's parade band, specializing in coaching the drumline for yearly competition, each spring since arriving at WCV in 2005. Mr. Bonney began his teaching career as an elementary band director in four buildings within the Oneida City School District in 2002.
Mr. Bonney is proud of the accomplishments of all his students at all levels and their successes such as NYSSMA solofest scores, summer music camps, acceptance into honors ensembles such as All-County Band/Orchestra/Jazz Ensemble, Area-All State selection, and even successful preparation for college/music school auditions and acceptance. Bonney said, "It is an honor to share my passion, experience and interests in all facets of the musical world with curious students, dedicated to learning a skill that can last them long after school has ended."
Mr. Bonney holds the following credentials: University of New England- Master of Science in Education (Secondary) ; SUNY Fredonia School of Music - Bachelor of Music in Music Education (NYS K-12 Permanent Certification) ; Onondaga Community College - Associate in Applied Science in Music ; Thomas R. Proctor Senior High School (Regents Diploma).
Scott has served locally at the county level for six consecutive years in the peer-elected capacity on the executive council for the Herkimer County Music Educators' Association in two year stints each as HCMEA Vice President, President, and President Emeritus. Musical leadership during the summers away from school were logged for more than a decade as the Director of Jazz Ensembles for Signature Music Camp. Committee work for HCMEA has included time with the advocacy, scholarship, and publicity roles. At WCV time was spent on the attendance committee and Jr. National Honor Society Faculty Council.
Adjudicating for ensemble placement in both jazz and concert bands at Signature Music Camp was a yearly occurrence for both youth and teen sessions of the camp. Scott also served as the sole trumpet adjudicator for both Oneida and Onondaga County's, All-County Jr. Band selection process.
Invitations to serve in the capacity as the guest conductor for the following upstate NY All-county band festivals include to date: Sullivan County Senior High Band, Oswego County Junior High Band, and Herkimer County Elementary Band.
Scott and his wife were selected as clinicians for the 2016 NYSSMA Winter Conference to share their findings from improving their band program in a presentation entitled, Strategies for Creating a Successful Rural Band Program.
Scott has played trumpet professionally since 1995 in various church, community, and school ensembles across upstate NY. He has spent the past five years playing lead trumpet in the Easy Money Big Band which he enjoys greatly. When not teaching privately or performing professionally as a solo ceremonial trumpeter he enjoys landscaping, home repair projects, the NY Mets, and his two Labrador Retrievers.
